The Complete Process of Extracting Castor Oil
Castor oil seed typically contains around 30%–50% oil (m/m), depending on its specific variety. The oil can be obtained from castor beans through mechanical pressing, solvent extraction, or a combination of both methods. The entire extraction process can be broadly categorized into seven stages:
1. Seed Collection
Ripened castor plants are selected for the seed collection process. The initial step involves placing the ripe castor plants outdoors on a hot day for natural drying, causing the plants to split open and release the seeds.
2. Dehulling
After harvesting, the castor seeds are dehulled either manually or with the assistance of a castor bean dehuller, a crucial step in the extraction process.
3. Cleaning
Following dehulling, the seeds undergo a thorough cleaning process to eliminate impurities like sand, leaves, sticks, and dirt, typically using a seed cleaner equipped with revolving screens or reels.
4. Drying
The cleaned seeds are heated in a steam-jacketed vessel to remove moisture content, subsequently hardening the seeds and preparing them for pressing.
5. Pressing
Crushed under high pressure using a screw press or oil expeller, the seeds yield extracted oil, subsequently filtered. The residual bulk is then mixed with a fresh batch of seeds for further pressing, resulting in castor cake.
6. Filtration
The extracted oil undergoes filtration through a filter press to remove impurities, dissolved acids, gases, and water.
7. Refining
In the final stage, oxidation and coloring substances are removed through neutralization and bleaching processes, followed by deodorization to yield odor-free oil.
Upon completion of the extraction cycle, high-quality and pure castor oil is obtained. For 100% genuine castor oil, contact RUNZOER INDIA
